They’re beautiful, they’re popular, and they can really enhance an outfit. It doesn’t hurt that they also cover your bum or side lumps. We’re talking about the kimono jacket. You’ll see them everywhere right now — in colors and patterns to suit just about any skin tone and any style type. And they are just…so…pretty.
In the past, we may have associated them with the boudoir because they have the same construction as a robe, particularly those in satin-y textiles, skin-tone neutrals and tied with a sash. A couple of years ago we were seeing pajama-style pants and tops worn in public (although I still don’t understand why anyone would want to wear sleepwear in public). But these styles function more as cardigans. You’ll see really cool and sophisticated kimono jackets and long kimono dusters available right now. Because of their prints and construction, they have a more “street wear” vibe. Some are real show-stoppers.
This year you’ll see a trend toward floral or intricate patterns. Just make sure you choose one that’s in the right scale for your body and style. Large florals, like voluptuous roses, work best for someone with a lot of romance in their features and personality. Smaller florals or little repeated patterns read as fresh and will complement someone with a more playful style and features.
Those whose wardrobes include comfortable sandals, linen pants and natural textiles might prefer a kimono with a nature print. Denim kimonos have been around for a while now and are a nice alternative to a summer wrap. And a striped kimono could punch up a classic type’s summer wardrobe.
Many of these kimonos have the loose construction and a flowy feel that are typical signatures of the boho style. All of them work well with casual outfits. Wear them over a simple, solid-color top or tank, with jeans or shorts, add a row of bangles or statement earrings and you’re good to go.

Leaning towards boho chic is particularly true of the “cocoon” versions that create a continuous curve around the bottom and up the front of the garment.
Don’t forget, a kimono jacket can serve double duty worn as beach or poolside cover-ups.
A kimono jacket with intricate or artsy detail, or a long dramatic robe-type one can jazz up or add elegance to a simple solid-color sheath or jumpsuit. Just be sure to let the kimono take center stage with your outfit. You don’t want to mix too many design or pattern elements to confuse the eye unless they are really in the same color family and print size. Adding one statement necklace or bold earrings should do it.
Since these kimonos are a contemporary version of a traditional centuries-old Japanese garment, they will likely have staying power. This is one item that you can pull out of your closet year after year and it will still look chic. A kimono jacket can also be the signature piece that speaks of your style — and does it with panache.
