Yes, $38,000,000! That’s what one lucky car buyer paid for a 1962 Ferrari GTO Berlinetta at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show and auction, a yearly extravaganza of the most spectacular antique cars in the world. Just over 200 historic automobiles gathered in the magnificent setting on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links where they are “oohed” and “ahhed” over by car lovers and admirers from all over the world.
There are the concept cars, like the Silver Mercedes in the picture, and, on the fairway, 27 classes of antique cars being judged by a group of internationally known car collectors and historians. It is hard to describe how absolutely gorgeous these cars are – most, but not all, restored to perfection. There are Dusenberg’s Auburns, Rolls-Royces, Packards, Bugattis, Maseraris, Bentleys, Ferraris, Mercedes, Jaguars, and names most of us have never heard of: Ruxton, Tatra, Delage, Delahaye, Horch, and Pegaso among others.
During Concours week, there are a wide variety of events from antique car races at LaGuna Seca to the Italian car show, Concorso Italiano, to multiple auction events throughout the Monterey area.
The event has a charitable component, as well. Total donations now exceed $17 million to local nonprofits on the Monterey Peninsula.
Even if you’re not an avid car lover, you will love these cars and all of the hoopla at Sunday’s Pebble Beach display. So, if you have never been to this event, put it on your bucket list and head to Monterey around the second week each August. You just might catch the classic car bug!
