Chocolate Cream Cheese Brownies Recipe

There is almost nothing more enjoyable than rich, chocolate cream cheese brownies. Give this recipe a try and see if you can resist eating more than one. They make a perfect, easy dessert that’s a real crowd-pleaser.


  • 3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped (3 squares)
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup (packed) light brown sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

Cream Cheese Brownies Topping

  • 8 ounces cream cheese (1 cup), softened
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar (1 pound)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chunks or chips (3 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar for garnish (optional)


Preheat the oven to 350º. Butter a 13 x 9 x 2-inch glass baking dish and set it aside.

For the Brownies

  1. Place the unsweetened and bittersweet chocolate and the butter in a microwave-safe bowl or in the top pan of a double boiler over simmering water.
    • If placed in the microwave, heat at 1-minute intervals, checking and stirring before heating again.
    • Alternatively, melt over the simmering water, constantly stirring until smooth and glossy.
  2. Add the six eggs, one at a time, beating with a wooden spoon after each addition.
  3. Mix the brown and white sugars into the mixture.
  4. Stir in the vanilla.
  5. Add the flour and blend until no white shows.
  6. Pour the mixture into the baking dish and smooth the top with a rubber spatula.

For the Cream Cheese Topping

  1. Place the cream cheese and powdered sugar in a small mixing bowl. Beat until just combined at low speed using an electric mixer or wooden spoon.
  2. Add the eggs and continue to beat for several minutes at medium speed. Scrape the sides of the bowl as necessary.
  3. Pour over the chocolate mixture in the pan.
  4. Sprinkle the chocolate chunks over the top.
  5. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the top is set and golden brown.
  6. Remove and place on a rack to cool.
  7. Dust the top with confectioners’ sugar using a sieve, if desired.

To serve the chocolate cream cheese brownies, cut them into squares about 2 x 2 inches and place them on a platter.

Makes about 24 (2-inch) brownies.
