I am officially over summer. Not the vacations, long evenings, or excuse to have a cocktail on a patio. Those can stay. I am over the part where walking from the house to the car feels like entering a sauna.
Here in Texas, September does not necessarily mean crisp mornings and falling leaves. It mostly means the thermometer still has an attitude. But that doesn’t stop me from thinking about fall clothes. In fact, this is one of my favorite times of year to shop because retailers are marking down summer merchandise while new fall pieces are arriving almost daily.
And somewhere between those two categories is the sweet spot: clothes you can wear right now and continue wearing well into fall. That is where I want to spend my money.
Shop the Transition, Not Just the Sale
A fantastic discount is only fantastic if you actually wear what you bought. We’ve all fallen victim to the 70%-off item that seemed irresistible in the dressing room and then spent three years hanging in the closet with the tags attached.
Instead, I’m looking for pieces that solve the awkward September and October dressing problem. It’s 88 degrees at 3 p.m., 68 degrees inside the restaurant, and suddenly you’re expected to dress for two completely different climates.
Fortunately, Fall 2026 fashion is giving us plenty to work with. This season is less about replacing your entire wardrobe and more about styling familiar pieces in fresher ways. Designers are playing with layering, modern tailoring, richer textures, and updated versions of classics we probably already love.
Cardigans Are Back, But They’ve Had an Upgrade
Yes, I know. Cardigans never exactly disappeared from the wardrobe of women over 50. We were wearing them while everyone else was busy “rediscovering” them. But this year’s versions feel noticeably fresher.
Instead of the very long, shapeless open cardigan that dominated closets for years, look for shorter lengths, interesting buttons, textured knits, collars, defined shoulders, and slightly more structure. Wear one buttoned as a top with trousers or jeans now, then layer it over a blouse or lightweight turtleneck when temperatures finally cooperate.
Blazers Are Getting More Interesting
A blazer remains one of the easiest ways to make an outfit look intentional, but Fall 2026 tailoring isn’t limited to the stiff corporate blazer of years past.
We’re seeing softer construction, sculpted shapes, cropped jackets, relaxed tailoring, and beautiful textures. Leather and suede blazers are also having a moment, which is particularly useful because they can function as both a blazer and lightweight jacket.
Throw one over a white T-shirt and jeans, pair it with trousers for work, or wear it over a dress. That’s the kind of purchase I can justify, especially when it’s marked down.
Suede Is Everywhere
If you want to add one thing that instantly makes your wardrobe feel like fall, make it suede. Suede jackets, loafers, boots, belts, and bags are everywhere this season, particularly in warm shades of cognac, chestnut, camel, and brown.
You don’t have to buy an entire suede outfit and start looking like you own a ranch. A beautiful suede tote or pair of loafers can give jeans and a white shirt an entirely different feel.
A suede jacket is an even bigger commitment, but it’s also one of those pieces that can stay in your closet for years.
Let’s Talk About Loafers
I love fall shoes, and loafers are once again everywhere. Classic loafers remain a smart buy, but you’ll also see tassels, chunkier soles, gathered leather, Mary Jane influences, and rich brown and burgundy shades.
They’re also perfect for this in-between season because you can wear them long before it’s cool enough for boots.
Pair them with ankle-length trousers, straight-leg jeans, skirts, or dresses. Add a blazer or cardigan and suddenly your outfit says, “Fall has arrived,” even if the weather forecast says otherwise.
And Yes, Boots Are Coming
The boot forecast for Fall 2026 is particularly good. Warm cognac and chestnut browns are showing up prominently, along with suede, refined Western styles, riding boots, slouchier silhouettes, and reptile-inspired textures.
While ankle boots certainly aren’t disappearing from my closet, knee-high boots are worth another look this year. They work beautifully with midi skirts and dresses and can make older pieces in your closet suddenly feel current again.
This is also the time of year when I start watching sale sections carefully. A great pair of boots can be expensive, so finding the right pair before you actually need them is much better than panic-shopping in November.
Don’t Ignore Transitional Jackets
One of the biggest fashion stories going into Fall 2026 is the return of practical jackets.
Barn jackets are still going strong, along with cropped utility jackets, lightweight technical jackets, suede jackets, and updated trenches.
These are especially useful if you live somewhere that doesn’t immediately become sweater weather after Labor Day. You can wear a lightweight jacket over a T-shirt, button-down, or dress without looking like you’re trying to force fall when Mother Nature clearly has other plans.
Look for Rich Fall Color
You don’t have to abandon your summer wardrobe on September 1. One of the easiest ways to transition it is simply to change the color story.
Fall 2026 is bringing plenty of color alongside the traditional neutrals. Rich reds, plum, brick, paprika, deep blues, olive, and beautiful shades of brown can instantly make an outfit feel more seasonal.
Try wearing a summer dress with a brown suede bag and loafers. Pair white jeans with a brick-colored cardigan. Add a burgundy belt to denim and a crisp button-down.
The Best Sale Find Is Something You’ll Wear Repeatedly
This is the rule I’m trying to follow this year: Don’t buy it because it’s on sale. Buy it because you’d be excited to wear it next week. End-of-summer sales can be an excellent opportunity to pick up denim, lightweight sweaters, blazers, button-down shirts, loafers, jackets, bags, and dresses that work across multiple seasons.
And before you hit “add to cart,” mentally create three outfits with the item using things you already own. If you can’t, it might not be the bargain you think it is.
Of course, I say this as someone fully capable of convincing herself that a spectacular pair of loafers will “go with everything.” Sometimes they actually do.
