I worked in luxury retail and fashion for over 25 years, so I have always followed the trends of the season, and fall trends are no different. Of course, as I hit my early 50’s, I realized most trends are not for me. Life is too short, and I only want to wear clothing that is flattering and makes me feel like I can conquer the world. You do not have to compromise fashion or a trend because of your age or size. I find that most of the times you can add a trend inspired piece to your closet to make everything seem fresh and fashionable.
When fall finally arrived, I took the time to take an inventory of my “uniform” and decide what fall trends to add to my closet. My uniform consists of blazers, jeans for casual, trousers or skirts for dressy and boots or pumps. These pieces are a no-fail for me, and my friends call it ‘my look.” I always have one of these key pieces on at all times, unless I am in workout gear. Below are a few trend inspirations that I will be adding to my uniform to freshen it up.

Animal Prints
I plan to add a leopard blouse into the mix. The blouse can be worn dressy or casual, depending on the look you are going for. I love the idea of a leopard blouse with a blazer and trouser jeans. Add in black pumps or high heel boots and the look is sexy.
Reformation Violet Blouse, $128

You can also add animal print shoes to bump up your look a notch. I have both leopard booties and pumps because I love the look so much.

Throw a tiger print t-shirt or sweater on with a blazer, skinny jeans and booties or knee-high boots and the look is modern.
French Connection Tiger Jacquard High Neck Sweater, $148

Snake print is big for fall. I am not such a fan of this trend, but if I happen to find a soft beautiful print, then I just might add it.
Rag & Bone Boyfriend Belt, was $195, now $156
Available in sizes s-l
Suiting and Belted Blazers
Suiting is big for fall, and I am so happy. I already own quite a few blazers in houndstooth, tweed, plaid and quilted patterns. Suiting can be casual or dressy. A great skinny or wide-leg trouser would look fabulous with this trend. To make this look modern, add a belt. Belted blazers are a big trend, so if you already own several blazers, invest in a great belt.
BB Dakota Belted Blazer, $118
Available in sizes xs-l
I love the idea of a skinny belt on a great men’s wear style blazer.
Laundry by Shelli Segal Shawl-Collar Double Breasted Blazer, was $139, now $62.50
Available in sizes 2-14
I also like to mix patterns. A great floral blouse with a houndstooth blazer looks so modern. Or try a boldly patterned blazer with an otherwise monochrome outfit for a sleek look.
LOFT Plus Floral Long Open Blazer, was $130 now $39.88
Available in sizes 14-26
Another great look that is tres chic is a belted cape with leggings or a pencil skirt and knee-high boots.
NY&C Belted Cape Jacket, $159.95
Available in sizes xs-xl
Midi Skirts
This is one of my favorite fall trends. You can basically do anything with a midi skirt. It can be dressed up or down, and the midi silhouette will work for fall and worn into other seasons with different accessories! This pink skirt will make a statement. To dress it up, put on a silky blouse, blazer and some great pumps.
Sonia Rykiel Pleated Midi Skirt, $1,088
Available in size s-l
Get the look for less in Vibrant Plum from Boden, $170
An all-black look with a midi skirt is so chic. If you would rather keep it casual, throw on a white t-shirt, denim jacket and sneakers.

For a fun, energetic look, pair this beautifully patterned skirt with a cozy sweater, motorcycle jacket, tights and booties.

Period Pieces
Romantic sleeves, lacy fabrics and a higher neckline are big fall trends this year. This is a look you have to be careful with, as to not look ridiculous. I love the idea of adding a romantic blouse with a blazer or with a solid midi skirt and motorcycle jacket to keep the look funky.
