According to Vogue, the styling trend of the Fall 2020 fashion season is the advocation of personal style over fashion. The resounding vibe was “You do you!” While vibrant, clear colors exploded on runways, there were also flowy, floral mid-length dresses in many collections. Vintage (old and new) reinvented itself with soft, embroidered velvets and silks seen as jackets and dresses. Puffed sleeves made a comeback and added softening to the shoulders of shirts. And silk printed blouses paired with carefully torn/worn jeans and chunky gold-tone jewelry with a new athletic shoe or well-chosen heel.
The Fashion Industry and COVID
Even after 30 years as a couture model, fashion show director, and writer/producer for the fashion and entertainment industries, this space of cultural relevance still entertains and excites me. Except when it doesn’t. Since the pandemic lockdown, the fashion industry has been highlighted for being exclusionary, a primary polluter of our oceans, a violater of labor laws in developing (and developed) countries and it has been cited for stockpiles of garments not sold which, apparently, must be burned to ensure the labels maintain the integrity of their luxe brand.
News of infractions like this in any business would not excite or entertain. Especially not the sensitive spirits of fashion lovers and aesthetics so let’s look at ourselves and our intentions moving forward with new eyes and hearts.
Fall 2020 Fashion Trend Report
An appropriate Fall Fashion 2020 trend report is a collective creation that inspires everyone to feel the beauty of their life and others. This year’s collection is born from a kind of suffering that reminds us of the truth: we’re all one, and the choices we make profoundly affect others. We’re in this life experience together, whether thriving in a bull market or dying alone in a senior care facility (as my father recently did).
This season is about reimagining the joy of this life and its experiences with a sense of gratitude, inclusion, and kind self-expression. Whether you wear a new, cascading crinoline skirt mixed with a vintage tailored blazer and satin bow where the button used to be or dressed from head to toe in bright orange, there’s joyful energy to be felt in the mix-up of styles, sexuality, and shapes.
Fall 2020 Fashion Must-Haves
These are some fall must-haves to wear while doing the most important job in the world—you doing you! You’ll also want to keep an eye out for other Fall 2020 fashion trends that can be customized to your personal taste, like jewel tones, fringe, rich brown colors, and more.
These blouses are perfect for Zoom meetings or to tuck in with jeans for an actual in-person (masked) outing:
Animal print is definitely back for fall. I love these chic new sneakers from the Coach collection. Coach recognized the “inclusion” trend before many other brands and met the call to move forward together. Oh, and you’re welcome to phone my precious friend, Kaytlin Hadley at Coach for more sneakers at 214–696–1772.
And of course, you’ll need some great denim to start this new season. Denim jeans are a soft and easy transition from five months of pajama bottoms and black leggings. Just enough dress up but not too much, right?
Pantone’s Fall 2020 Color Palette
Pantone’s Fall 2020 colors include Amberglow and Samba. Amberglow, a radiant autumnal orange, promotes self-confidence and creative self-expression. Samba, a voluptuous sultry red, introduces upbeat energy. Add them to your wardrobe in a blouse, dress, trousers, handbag, or scarf. We even put together a collection of Pantone’s Fall 2020 colors and how to wear them.
