I love to work out in a tank top, but not all tops are created equal. I need a top with a built-in bra that provides both support and shape — I don’t want my already-less-than-perky boobs smushed flat. I also like a tank that hits right at the waist of a low-rise legging, though I realize many women like them longer.
For yoga, Pilates, spin class and weight training, these are some of my favorites.
Available in four saturated colors and black, this tank is both stylish and functional. I love the strappy back and the flattering side ruching. The built-in bra has removable pads for shape and support for low-impact sports. Available at Sweaty Betty, $65.
I love how this support top divides and conquers with molded cups that help alleviate the uni-boob look while giving medium support for gym workouts. The hidden iPhone pocket and cord grommet make moving around the gym while listening to your tunes easy. Available at Athleta, $69.
This tank is functional and chic. Just look at the laser-cut detail on the crisscross straps! For those of us who like a shorter top, this one fits the bill. Available at Alo Yoga, $72.
This top checks all the boxes for me: removable cups, not too long, an interesting back. The mint color of this tank provides the illusion of cool for a hot summer workout. Available at Coovy, $33.
It’s not easy to find a tank that comes in five great color combos, is a nice length, and has a pretty design. If a basic built-in bra will do for you, this Prana tank top is the one. Available at Backcountry, $65-$69.
This no-fuss tank comes in five colors and has good coverage and shelf bra. It’s the perfect basic — and at a price point below $35, you can stock up. Available at Yoga Outlet, $35.
Here’s a simple and stylish option. The shelf bra does the trick if you don’t need lift and shape, and the ponte fabric is a nice change of pace. Available at Yoga Outlet, $54.
