The BEST Hair Products for Dealing With Frizz

hair products for frizz

I live a comfortable life. Spring, summer, and fall I enjoy an even, air-conditioned temperature of about 70°F. And in the winter, I’m lucky to have that heater pumping at 74°. Your favorite temperature range may be different than mine, but I bet you live a comfortable life, too. And when my naturally wavy hair starts to frizz, I blame heat & humidity or the spring rains & summer storms. Who knew, all along, I should have been pointing that finger of blame at myself and my thermostat?! All I needed were hair products for frizz.

Our nice comfortable lives—safe, dry, & climate controlled—are what is wreaking havoc on our hair. BUT that’s actually great news! It means we can forget about the weather! Forget about the frizz! We can take control of our smooth, shiny hair once more. Our top 5 hair products for frizz will make you and your hair shine, even in the rain!

1. Aveda Nutriplenish Deep Hydration Starter Kit, $109

If you’re like me (and you probably are if you’re reading this article) you care about your coiffure. You want to treat it well, and you certainly don’t want to fight it. But that’s how managing frizz is always framed: the fight against frizz. The truth is much nicer because you and your hair are in this together. And your moisture imbuing regimen should start with—what else, but?!—a starter kit. Aveda has a new deep hydration line of hair products boasting “a decadent vegan superfood blend providing nutrient-powered hydration” which all sounds lovely. Turns out, it actually is lovely!

My hair is dry for a number of reasons. I spend a lot of time in the hot southern sun, I use heat styling, and I have dyed my hair more times than Betsey Johnson. Aveda Nutriplenish Deep Hydration Starter Kit is my foundation for controlling frizz. The shampoo & conditioner penetrate hair and lock in the added moisture. It’s exactly like putting lotion on while your skin is still damp, and your pores are still open, after a warm shower. Follow this up with the leave-in conditioner which both detangles and protects your hair against heat styling all the way up to 450°F.

2. Sun Bum Revitalizing Conditioning Masque, $3.49

Sun Bum is my absolute favorite brand for beauty & hair care. I first started using their products when I lived on the beach in California. But it doesn’t matter where you live, Sun Bum brings the beach to you with their environmentally friendly, cruelty-free products. The Revitalizing Conditioning Hair Masque makes the Top 5 Hair Products for Frizz list because it works on any hair texture and thickness, as well as colored or virgin hair. Also, it smells ah – maze – ing! I recommend using the mask once a week for maintenance purposes. If you bleach or dye your hair frequently, then go ahead and use it more often — can’t hurt, WILL help.

3. Verb Ghost Oil, $18

Verb is a super cool company run by women, for women. Their marketing features real results in un-retouched photos so that you can really see the impact their product makes on hair. It’s like when your friend test-drives a new beauty product, you want to scrutinize it up close, you want to see it in action. Action is the keyword for Verb. And that’s why, along with their honest photography, they have fun little videos of people using their product and showing off the results.

When I finally tried Verb’s Ghost Weightless Hair Oil, I really, really, really wanted it to work. Typically products like this end up staving off frizz by leaving my locks lamely plastered to my skull. Not cool! But the Ghost Oil, which is part of a whole line of weightless Ghost products, seemed to disappear into my hair. I only knew it was there because of the springy waves of shiny hair I got to admire in the many mirrors I intentionally walked past all day. This product is a Must Have!

4. Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray, $42

Imagine pulling a pristine glass fishbowl down over your head before leaving the house each day. That’s what this finishing spray by Oribe is. Oribe bills this Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray as ‘Miami-tested’, but you can also bill it as Prime Women tested & trusted. Whether you live in Barbados or Death Valley, you need this frizz-freeing hair product, humidity index aside. The spray adds a feather-light texture & hold to your hairstyle, and it acts as a UV shield, which that fishbowl I mentioned before simply doesn’t do. Oribe isn’t kidding when they say their anti-humidity spray is impermeable. I give this product complete credit for keeping my coiffure on point through poolside summer parties as well as the all-seasons volunteering I do at the Arboretum & Botanical Garden. Ignore the price tag and treat yourself to a hairstyle that lasts all day!

5. BaBylissPro Cermix Extreme Hair Dryer, $69.99

The final two on this list aren’t gels, creams, pomades, or sprays. They are hardware, and they changed my life. I’m sure you’re familiar with the BABYliss brand and their high-priced styling products. It wasn’t until my blowdryer died over the winter holidays that I decided to see what all the fuss was about and get my own BABYliss. I did my research, looked at my budget, and decided on this blowdryer and separate diffuser.

The Ceramix Xtreme is at the lower end of BABYliss’s dryers which can ring up at almost $200. This reasonably priced dryer has all the features you need to let your hair live frizz-free. There are two speed settings: high for wearing your hair straight, and low for wearing your hair either wavy or curly. And most importantly, there are three temperature settings.

  1. ‘Hot’ is great for when you don’t have a ton of time and you want to lock in those straight locks without pulling out your straightener. The blowdryer even comes with a flat directed attachment for this very purpose.
  2. ‘Warm’ is wonderful for wearing your hair in whatever its natural state may be—straight, wavy, curly, and everything in between—but without the damage that hot styling can cause.
  3. But THE single most important setting on this dryer is ‘cool’. If you have wavy or curly hair, drying it on cool allows your waves and curls to retain their definition and hang on to all that moisture from the product list above.

6. Nano Titanium Universal Finger Diffuser, $14.99

I’m adding the Nano Titanium Finger Diffuser because I’ve never used anything like it. I’d given up completely on finding a diffuser that didn’t make my hair look as those my waves had slid right down my hair shaft. The roots would be straight and the ends would be wavy in the worst, most frizzy way. But this diffuser works so well that my waves are soft, shiny, and could totally pass as curls. Best of all, this shockingly good product has a universal fit to pair with almost any blowdryer. So you too can make frizzy hair an extinct and forgotten beast.

Do yourself, and your hair, a favor and try these products. Then, do your friends a favor and recommend these products to them. We can all live happy, comfortable, FRIZZ-FREE lives!
