Does LED Light Therapy Reverse The Signs Of Aging?

LED light therapy

When I turned 27, the mirror revealed two things I had not noticed previously: a few gray hairs and the beginnings of hyperpigmentation on my forehead. Cut to nearly two decades later and the mirror’s reflection only betrays more of each plus other facial infractions (crow’s feet, mild rosacea, and the “elevens,” for starters). So when the chance to test the Trophy Skin RejuvaliteMD Anti-Aging Light Therapy System came to me, I jumped. An at-home LED light therapy system that can potentially address the melasma that’s webbing along my forehead, migrating down my jawline, and deepening in color with age? Sign me up!

How The At-Home LED Light Therapy Works

First things first: What does the RejuvaliteMD do? The small lamp delivers LED (light-emitting diode) light therapy, which uses wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin. Depending on the light waves emitted, certain skin functions activate, such as cell rejuvenation and collagen and elastin regeneration. By stimulating the skin’s own healing mechanisms, LED light therapy can aid in resolving such anti-aging concerns as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and inflammation while also smoothing skin and reducing pore size.

Unlike some at-home LED light therapy systems that only harness red light, the RejuvaliteMD combines four UV-free light wavelengths—red, yellow, amber, and infrared—that penetrate the skin at varying levels to better address a host of aging issues. Red light targets skin tightening and smoothing; yellow and amber lights address redness and hyperpigmentation minimization; and infrared works on deeper wrinkle reduction. Trophy Skin recommends using the unit a minimum of five times per week for five minutes per area you want to address—and if you desire swifter results, bumping usage up to twice a day.

My Trophy Skin RejuvaliteMD Anti-Aging Light Therapy System Journey Begins

Call it a case of bad timing: When the unit arrived at my house, I was in the middle of Storm Isaiah’s wrath. We suffered through an eight-day power outage, delaying my date with my new at-home LED light therapy system. My RejuvaliteMD waited patiently for me and, as soon as the power came back, I started my 30-day test period.

After assembling the RejuvaliteMD, which takes less than a minute, I conducted a patch test on the inside of my forearm to check for skin sensitivity. I slipped on the provided goggles (you must wear protective goggles whenever the unit is on), placed the LED panel the recommended four inches from my forearm, and hit the power button. At five minutes, the panel automatically switched off, and I waited the suggested four hours to see if my skin showed any signs of irritation. The good news: no redness!

Me before LED Light Therapy

That night I washed my face as recommended, placed my RejuvaliteMD on the floor (I’m sure you can put it on a desk or your bed, but I opted to be lazy and lay on the ground), and positioned the LED panel four inches from my face (the unit’s adjustable arm makes swiveling the panel to wherever you need it a cinch). I played a podcast, slipped on my goggles, hit the power button, and relaxed. When the unit switched off, I turned onto my side to address the intense melasma I have near my ear, hit the power button, and relaxed some more. Trophy Skin warns that you might feel a pulsing sensation during the treatment; I felt no pulses, only glowing warmth. Once my sessions commenced, I applied my nightly skincare (a retinoid cream and ultra-hydrating eye cream) and hit the sheets.

Melasma before my LED Light Therapy treatment

Weeks One and Two: A Small Adjustment

That first week, I did this routine before bed Monday through Friday. By week two, I thought, “Why not do this twice a day, five days a week?” I included the regimen first thing in the morning and right before bed. Unfortunately for me, this proved a little too much for the area around my eyes; the skin felt tender and tight and appeared red. Trophy Skin cautions that skin can feel drier than usual after treatments. This is a normal side effect of the therapy that can be counteracted with a moisturizing product. I cut back my treatments to once a day, five days a week, and slathered on my eye cream immediately after each session.

Week Three: Smoother Skin

By week three, the area around my eyes rebounded, and I began to notice that my skin felt much smoother. I didn’t see a universal reduction in my hyperpigmentation—only a few spots seemed to respond. As an added bonus, I also threw in some leg lifts as I did my light therapy sessions. Not a recommendation from the company, but a way to do a little abdomen workout as I lay on the floor. Because: Why not?

Melasma After LED Light Therapy

Week Four: Bye, Crow’s Feet!

At the end of week four, I noticed an overall reduction in my skin redness and crow’s feet. However, much to my chagrin, my melasma continues to loom large and in charge. But, as Trophy Skin informs, LED light therapy is a progressive treatment; the effects are cumulative the more sessions you put in. I’m excited to see where my skin will be in 60 days and beyond. And, thankfully, Trophy Skin provides a one-year warranty (as well as a 60-day, money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied). So you can ensure your machine works effectively as you progress.

Me after LED Light Therapy

Integrating the RejuvaliteMD at-home LED light therapy system into my nightly routine—the relaxation, the tighter skin, the ab workout—has been positive. And if it decreases my melasma down the road, all the better!
