Our second edition this year in our wardrobe staple posts (or wardrobe essentials) is about that classically elegant, yet versatile addition to anyone’s closet. A beautiful, well tailored white pant. Everyone has their favorites styles, of course. But whether it’s straight, wide leg, stirrup, palazzo, or skinny, a pair of white trousers can be adapted for almost any occasion, given the right combination of shoes, top and jewelry. The look is always cool and crisp. Depending on the weight and fabric, a well tailored white pant can take you from spring through winter. We know, white has typically followed the rule of after Memorial Day and before Labor Day, but “winter white” is completely acceptable. Even Emily Post has come down on the side of common sense regarding white. It’s more about the fabric choice than the season.
With an eye toward spring, we selected a gorgeous culotte pant from Rag & Bone. Pair it with a black top that has a special flair – like this asymmetric slit in back. This particular Rowe Pleated Culotte has sharp front pleats that add dimension to the full, fluid cut of these versatile pants with a high waist and cropped hems. The material felt substantial and fluid, falling into a graceful drape. I usually would not choose a culotte for myself. (You know how you have a vision of yourself in certain things and just can’t accept the compliments you receive? Culottes have always been that fashion item for me.) However, I have to say, once I saw the photos I was surprised and pleased. Elle recently noted the variety of culottes headed our way for spring and called the fit “universally flattering.” Who am I to argue with Elle? Fashion, and style, in particular, is about stepping out of your comfort zone on occasion. So this is me outside my comfort zone.
