Modern kimonos hit the fashion scene a couple of years ago. At first, you were more likely to see young women wearing them as a cover up at the beach, but may have thought of them more as a robe than a kimono. When you did see someone wearing a kimono as day wear, they most likely were the boho chic fashionista type. As is so often the case though, what we see young trendy types wearing one year often becomes mainstream fashion a year or two later. This spring you are seeing the more modern kimonos in virtually every store!
If you still don’t see yourself wearing a kimono because you aren’t into bohemian, you might want to take another look. The more modern kimonos come in all different lengths, so if you aren’t tall enough to carry off a duster, try one of the shorter jacket lengths or wraps. You’ll also find them with fringe or lace, in plain colors or exotic prints. A kimono can dress up an otherwise plain outfit or just be a nice alternative to a sweater or light jacket. Give one a try. We shouldn’t let the 20/30 somethings have all the fun!
The full-length kimono is perfect with a camisole and jeans or leggings. Pair one with a summer dress or for evening, break up an all black or white ensemble with a colorful kimono. Below are three of our favorites.
The short kimonos are a colorful and lightweight alternative to jackets or sweaters. They are also perfect for those of us who feel a long kimono overwhelms our short frame. Any of the three below will make the dullest outfit come alive!
