Makeup Artist Tips and Tricks for Long Lasting Lipstick

Long lasting lipstick

A bold lip can instantly elevate your look, but not if it fades, smudges, or disappears long before the day is over. The good news is that long lasting lipstick isn’t just about buying the most expensive formula. The secret lies in how you prepare your lips, apply your color, and maintain it throughout the day. Here are some simple prep techniques and makeup artist tricks to help your favorite lipstick stay vibrant and beautiful for hours.

Start with Smooth, Hydrated Lips

The foundation of long lasting lipstick begins before you ever reach for your favorite shade. Dry, flaky lips create an uneven surface that causes lipstick to cling to rough patches and wear away more quickly.

Gently exfoliate your lips once or twice a week with a lip scrub to remove dead skin. After exfoliating, apply a moisturizing lip balm and give it a few minutes to absorb. Before applying lipstick, blot away any excess balm with a tissue. Your lips should feel hydrated, but not slippery.

Here are some popular lip scrubs and hydrating masks to help you achieve longer lasting lipstick.

Apply a Lip Primer

Just as face primer helps foundation stay in place, a lip primer creates a smooth base that improves wear time. Lip primers help fill in fine lines, prevent feathering, and give lipstick something to grip.

If you don’t have a dedicated lip primer, a tiny amount of foundation or concealer applied to the lips can create a similar effect. This neutralizes your natural lip color and helps your lipstick appear more vibrant and true to shade.

Outline and Fill Your Lips with Lip Liner

Lip liner is one of the most effective tools for extending the life of your lipstick. Choose a liner that closely matches your lipstick or your natural lip color.

Start by outlining the edges of your lips to prevent bleeding and create a defined shape. Then, lightly fill in your entire lip with the liner. This creates a base layer of color so that even if your lipstick begins to fade, your lips will still have a polished appearance.

Apply Thin Layers, Blot, and Set

One of the biggest mistakes people make is applying a thick layer of lipstick all at once. Heavier applications are more likely to transfer, smudge, and wear off unevenly.

Instead, apply one thin coat, blot gently with a tissue, and then apply a second light coat. Building color in layers creates a stronger bond with the lips and results in a more even finish that lasts longer.

For even more staying power, hold a single-ply tissue over your lips and lightly dust translucent setting powder over the tissue. This sets the lipstick without making it look dry or cakey.

Choose the Right Formula

Not all lipsticks are designed to last the same amount of time. If longevity is your top priority, consider long-wear, matte, transfer-resistant, and liquid formulas. These products are specifically formulated to withstand eating, drinking, and everyday activities. Keep in mind that matte formulas can be more drying, so maintaining healthy, moisturized lips is especially important.

Cream lipsticks, satin finishes, and glosses offer beautiful shine and comfort but typically require more frequent touch-ups.
