The Bobbi Brown Cosmetics line has been a staple in enhancing women’s beauty for decades. Since its launch, the line has been providing us a way to use makeup as an enhancement to our natural selves and how we don’t have to spend hours in front of the mirror to look great – unless we want to play with makeup (I still love to do that!). Here’s the scoop on Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and why it’s still a staple on our vanities to this day.
Since 1991 (the year I graduated from high school – wow!), Bobbi Brown Cosmetics has been giving women a reason to both collect and use its cosmetics. Starting out the line with 10 gorgeous shades of lipstick (red, burnt red, blackberry, salmon, beige, raisin, brown, rose, pink, and orange) at Bergdorf Goodman’s in Manhattan, the store sold 10 times the amount of product on the first day than was expected in the entirety of the first month.
To this day, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics still uses the “skin first” approach to defining an individual’s beauty. Offering undertone correct shades (think, cool, neutral, or warm) by starting with a base that most flatters each of us, the guesswork of laying the proper makeup foundation is gone.
So, once you’ve found the color that suits you best, there’s no need to worry about harsh lines around the jawline (always open your mouth when applying a foundation to avoid it – just a quick tip) or an artificial look with a face that doesn’t match your neck or body.
For the past 20 years, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics has been giving back by giving educational grants for both girls and women to even the entrepreneurial equality playing field.
Called the Pretty Powerful Fund, it’s donated well over $1 million to assist in education and female-focused resources that have reached 170,000 girls across the globe. Partnering with She’s the First, the non-profit organization, knows that education is the first step towards a more equitable future.
If you’re not familiar with the cosmetic line, checking out the bestsellers is a fun way to explore and find some new favorites:
Luxe Lipstick – Infused with skincare, the lipstick offers a satin finish. And while all 39 (yes, 39) shades are based on a neutral palette, you’ll find some saucier colors like Express Stop (a bright coral shade) and Plum Brandy (a dark purple-y plum). But the true nude, Almost Bare, really is an ideal nude shade for any time of year.
Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF 15 – 41 shades of undertone-true, 16-hour formula with a natural matte finish. Perfect for oily to normal skin.
Skin Corrector Stick – 12 different shades that cancel out everything from dull to red to purple and bluish undertones. If you have dark circles you’d like to cancel, go for a yellow-y peach shade to neutralize. In a stick form, it’s super buildable and doesn’t look dry.
Highlighting Powder – At my age, I’m not looking for a strobe-like glare on my face. This is where the Highlighting Powder comes in perfectly. Nine shades of pretty, pearly glow offer a translucent radiant look and feel.
In addition to its line of beautifully flattering neutral cosmetic shades, Bobbi Brown offers a skincare line of cleansers, soap, makeup removers, balms, creams, clarifiers, and tonics to both help remove makeup and to keep our skin in check. While the line is plentiful, here are my picks for the ones you need to check out:
Vitamin Enriched Face Base – If there’s one product that I’ve heard about over the others, it’s the Bobbi Brown Face Base bestseller. Vitamin-enriched, it’s a primer with a hydrating kick to prep the face for makeup. Perfect for normal to oily skin, using this base is like providing a smooth canvas for your makeup.
Hydrating Face Tonic – A skin conditioner that’s used right after cleansing the face. It also helps to prep the skin for additional treatment products. It’s ideal for women that want additional hydration in their skincare routine.
Soothing Cleansing Oil – Melts away makeup (even if it’s been on for hours) and leaves skin free of pollutants while nourishing.
Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover – Gentle but still powerful, it removes everything from makeup to mascara while keeping the delicate skin around the eyes in check.
Extra Cleansing Balm – If you love reaching for decadent products, this is the one you’ll want to use. Using our own body heat, it melts and takes with it makeup and impurities while leaving the skin still nourished. Add in the fact that it has orange oil as an ingredient, and the scent is not only a happy one; it’s downright lovely.
Lathering Tube Soap – For those of us that can’t get enough of a lather-style cleanser. It removes both makeup and dirt and has been a fan favorite for years.
