What to Buy Now: January Buying Guide

What to Buy in January

If you’re at all like us, here around the PrimeWomen office, then you are shopped out! BUT – It’s time to stay ahead of the curve, taking advantage of the variety of deals available in January.

Travel

It’s easy to daydream about exotic locations in January, with the sun setting horrifically early and temps dropping. Our minds turn toward the future warmer months, summer vacations and the like.

One form of travel is growing in popularity by listening and responding to guests needs: Cruises. Gone are the days of One-Size-Fits-All cruising. You can specify the overall experience, and there are tons of great locations to choose from. We recommend Alaska! Departing in April and May, it is the best time ever to see the Canadian west coast and Alaska at an affordable price, and unfortunately, much of her majesty may fade shortly as the effects of climate change impacts the area.

Hotels see a big post-Holiday price drop, so think about where you’d like to weekend in February and March! Even a staycation or a short road trip works, with the likelihood of winter storm airport delays making long-distance travel more difficult.

Another option for vacation lodgings is the giant Air BnB. You can completely customize your needs here, as well. You can choose to rent the whole home, many of which the owners live offsite. From large mansions to tiny beach bungalows, you can find an eclectic variety of stays through AirBnB, which often provide a more immersive, local-vibe experience. The best prices are in the winter, simply because many people don’t consider winter travel.

White Sales

January is the month that retailers discount the prices on linens, bedding, and all things related, hence the name “White Sale”. If you haven’t indulged in 600+ thread count sheets because of the price, then your patience has paid off! White Sales present you with the opportunity to purchase celebrity-hotel-level luxury linens, and help spruce up the house to make the end of winter more bearable!

Just about every retailer has items that qualify under “White Sale”, including places like Home Depot, which will offer up to  40% off of home furniture, decor and linens (and yes! You can shop online for home delivery or store pickup.)

The biggest discount for this year’s White Sales is awarded to Wayfair, savings up to 80%!

Target gets in on the White Sale fever with affordable and quality brands like Fieldcrest. This sale, which offers an extra 10% off, begins January 7 and runs through the 13th.

Overstock.com is offering a variety of White Sale-related items at big discounts, as well! For example, they have a special 25%-off sale on items that make your home a healthier place to rest and recharge!

Overstock Healthy Home Sale

World Market has a variety of decor items for sale, but their big deal is 60% off home furnishings! If you love the globe-trotter-eclectic aesthetic, you’ll definitely find a few pieces that can serve as statement pieces for your home.

Anthropologie offers similar eclectic decor & furnishings and is offering 25% off these items plus select bedding. Since Anthropologie prices are at a higher-end level, this is a great chance to score some of their luxury home items.

Clothing

Athleisure and activewear are best sellers in January as everyone returns to their exercise routines post-holiday. It’s also the time of year that activewear serves as a layer under your clothes for warmth, so it’s a good time to stock up on staples, as well.

Century 21 has a big sale, offering up to 50% off it’s activewear brands for the whole family.

Carbon 38 is offering up to 70% off it’s luxury activewear (and is an all-woman run company!). While you’re there, be sure to snag a pair of these wide-leg velvet pants! Priced at $45, which is $100 off! If there’s one pair of pants you need to own this winter-it’s these:

Bare Necessities is also offering a shop-wide sale, one of the biggest discounts we’ve seen hunting around to bring you all the deals.  Many people don’t think about the best time of year to buy undergarments, but we are here to tell you, NOW is the time! Save up to 70% off, with special deals on everything from shapewear to lingerie to activewear.

Tech Stuff

Televisions tend to price drop in January, in expectation of the upcoming football season finale – the Super Bowl, which is slated for February 3 this year. In 2018, stores like Amazon, Best Buy, and Target offered great discounts and we anticipate the same for 2019.

Apple is expected to drop the price on 2018 models of the iPhone, as many anticipate the retirement of the XS models. This also likely means a continuing price drop on the older models, like the 6S/6S Plus or the 7/8.
