Few things make you look older – or feel less confident – than under-eye bags. I know because, for the last month or so, they’ve been plaguing me every morning when I wake up. If they were just a little puffy, it would be one thing, but mine give off the impression I was in a bar fight the night before and definitely didn’t win. I hate my dark, puffy, undereye bags, and unfortunately, I’m not alone in the battle to get rid of them. So, I decided to find out what was causing mine and not only how to get rid of them but preferably how to prevent them from happening in the first place.
What causes under-eye bags?
While sometimes you’re unfortunate enough to have a genetic predisposition to have puffy under eyes and dark circles, there are lifestyle choices that can add to or cause them as well. Some of the most common include:
- Aging
- Heredity
- Allergies
- Not getting enough sleep or restless sleep
- Too much alcohol or sodium.
- Hormones
How to get rid of under-eye circles naturally.
First things first, stop drinking too much alcohol or eating too many high-sodium foods. Get more – and better – sleep. Turn off the screens at least 30 minutes before you try to get zzz’s, get rid of ambient light in your room, eliminate unnecessary noises, and make sure you’ve got a comfortable place to sleep. If your pillow is from the 80s, it’s time to get a new one. If your sheets have rips, buy some new ones. And, if you’re cold all night, get a thicker comforter.
It might sound like you’re throwing money at the issue, but realistically, feeling rested is integral to improving almost every part of your life. Don’t believe me? Hang out with a toddler that missed their nap and tell me how happy they are. If you’re getting better sleep, you’ll look and feel better all day long, and that includes under-eye circles.
That didn’t work; now what?
Ok, so you’re getting great sleep and taking care of yourself, and you still look like a brawler when you look in the mirror in the morning. Sometimes, that’s just the way it is, and you’ll need to add something to your self-care routine to get back on track. In those instances, here are our top choices to relieve dark circles and puffiness under your eyes.
If you can’t get rid of puffy eyes and dark circles immediately, give yourself some grace. They can be really tricky to eliminate, but if you eat right, avoid over-imbibing, and get enough sleep, you’ll find yourself looking younger each day.
