We connected with Tiffany Hendra to discuss tips to support your mental health during the menopause transition.
Interviewer:
Thank you for connecting with us, Tiffany! If anyone has been on your feed recently, they will see that you have risen to be a champion for women’s well-being, empowering them to be bold and authentic.
Tiffany Hendra:
You’re so sweet. Thanks! Yes, it’s a driving passion rooted in personal experience. I love to see my sisters succeed and share ways to support their vitality—physically, spiritually, and mentally.
Interviewer:
On the topic of mental health, could you briefly tell our readers why it inspires you?
Tiffany Hendra:
Well, I am open about my own mental health struggles and how I was forced to reexamine my life when I hit perimenopause. I honestly had no clue what was happening to me!
I’ve struggled with seasons of depression, and I want to help other women get the support they need.
For instance, I read the other day that the risk of depression in women actually DOUBLES during menopause. Women also tend to isolate during this season, which exacerbates symptoms.
Interviewer:
Wow, that’s shocking . . . but I guess when I look around at the women in my life, I can see the signs of overwhelm, body issues, and unpredictable hormones. So, what can women pre- and post-menopause do to support their mental health?
Tiffany Hendra:
Excellent question. In partnership with CAITERA®, I’m hoping to get the word out about a few easy ways that we can support the mental health of the women in our lives during menopause. But, before I dive in, I want anyone reading this to know: you are not crazy. Menopause impacts mental health, and it’s important not to judge yourself. And, please, seek the guidance of a licensed therapist to get the professional support you need.
First of all, educate yourself. There are so many wonderful books and resources available that provide a wealth of information from some truly amazing experts in the field. It’s important to learn as much as you can in order to better support yourself and others.
Second, encourage self-care activities that help lower anxiety. Something simple but effective is to run a hot bath for that special woman in your life, especially if she’s not gonna do it for herself. Or, instead of inviting your friend, mom, or sister to the usual happy hour at a loud overstimulating restaurant, perhaps suggest a nature walk, mani/pedi, or lunch at a cozy cafe. (My friends and I make “healthy happy hour” dates without alcohol at a spa or workout spot.)
Third, really important, is to show compassion. We are already frustrated enough with ourselves, so extending compassion, grace, patience, and understanding is soooo important. The last thing you want to do is say things like: “mind over matter,” “that’s life at this age,” or “my mom barely had symptoms”. Set boundaries with those in your life who don’t get it!
We have brain fog, we’re forgetful . . . which can be very frustrating. My hubby has been my biggest cheerleader through all this—a real champion. He has communicated with me, so he understands what’s going on and has shown so much compassion, grace, and patience.
Fourth, choose the right supplementation that will support your mental health and your mood. It’s vital to replenish nutrients needed in this season. I love the 6-in-1 multivitamin called WELLNESS WAKE-UP™ by CAITERA®. It comes complete with adaptogenic herbs to support the adrenals and stress management, as well as probiotics for gut health. A good mood starts in the gut!
Fifth and final, stay connected with a supportive group of women. We tend to isolate during this season—I know I did at times. But it makes you feel worse. So, to feel seen, heard, and supported during menopause is a total game changer for your mental health. Women thrive when they feel connected and supported by other women, especially during midlife and beyond. Reach out and share what you’re going through with women who listen, show empathy, and offer support.
Interviewer:
Fantastic tips! Any final thoughts you want to pass on to women in this chapter?
Tiffany Hendra:
Yes, ladies, don’t forget to be compassionate with yourself—give yourself some grace. The fog will lift and you will be living in color again!
We want to thank Empowerment Coach and CAITERA® wellness ambassador Tiffany Hendra for her time.
