Something about spring makes people want to declutter, rearrange, and breathe a little fresh life into their living spaces. That can mean something as simple as slapping on a fresh coat of paint, changing out your throw pillows, or rearranging your furniture. Or, it can mean starting from the ground up and creating something entirely new. Whether it’s a large- or small-scale project, the most challenging part for many people is finding home decor inspiration.

The Difficulties of Decorating

Often the uncertainty comes down to one of three factors:

  1. You’ve amassed or inherited pieces over the years that have yet to evolve with your style or maybe were never reflective of it at all (hello, grandma’s rocking chair).
  2. You don’t know your personal style.
  3. You know what you like, but you need to figure out how to curate it or blend colors, patterns, and furniture from different eras together for a seamless effect.

Then factor in what’s trending in colors and aesthetics, and it’s easy to see why people throw up their hands and give up or, worse yet, order an entire look straight off a showroom floor.

Fill your home with things that have meaning to you, not stuff you bought because it was grouped together in a store or magazine. There’s nothing wrong with a curated room, but avoid the “matchy-matchy” vibe and infuse a little personality into your space. Even the most beautifully decorated homes almost always have a personal touch, whether in the form of a beloved family heirloom or a quirky work of art.

Taking Home Decor Inspiration from Social Media

Learning to define your style and work with what you have is challenging, and interior decorators are costly. However, thanks to social media, you can save money on a professional (unless, of course, you want to). There are plenty of Instagram accounts out there that offer tips and inspiration. Bookmark the ones you like and create a virtual vision board so that whether you tackle it on your own or hire a pro, you’ll have plenty of ideas for making your home your happy place.

If the current farmhouse vibe is your thing, then @plankandpillow will make your shiplap-loving heart smile. This husband and wife team combines their professional building and decorating skills to give their feed plenty for you to chew on. Think lots of white, wood, and warmth from pops of dark accent colors. We like the reel depicting how they stage an entry table because, let’s face it, table staging is an art in itself.

@hygge_vibes

Home is where the hygge is, and while many people associate this aesthetic with cold weather, the truth is that you can create the look any time of year. You just have to cozy up to textures, greenery, and paired-down furnishings. Check out hygge_vibes for ideas on creating comfy nooks or rooms inviting you to relax and unwind.

@jonathanadler

Bright, bold colors and patterns can be intimidating, but @jonathanadler makes it fun! Follow his feed for playful ways to add a pop of color to any interior. His keen eye for combining the fun and funky with the lavish and luxurious will inspire you to punch up your home’s palette, too.

@splendorinthesouth

If your college dorm was decked out in Laura Ashley and your Southern Living subscription is on auto-renew, then @splendorinthesouth will make you happier than Scarlett O’Hara at a 12 Oaks barbeque. From wallpaper to wainscoting, toile to topiaries, and florals to finials, this feed has plenty of inspiration for marrying the old with the new. It’s proof that any home can have Southern Charm—even those north of the Mason-Dixon line.

One of the biggest roadblocks to decorating is mixing furniture in a way that looks intentional.
