Injectable Peptides: Do They Work, And Are They Safe?

For years, people have gone to great lengths to find the fountain of youth. Several methods have been used in an attempt to turn back the hands of time. Botox, lifts, expensive creams and serums, various diets and workouts, and several types of hormone therapies have been employed with varying degrees of success.

Today, injectable peptides are being closely looked at as a popular anti-aging strategy. Though hardly a newcomer to the game, they have been gaining ground as an effective way to give a more youthful appearance. Read on to find out what they are, how to use them, and which are the best for reversing the signs of aging.

What are Peptides?

As we age, our bodies produce less of the human growth hormone (HGH), which is responsible for the development of muscle and bone mass. The decline in HGH production leads to less muscle tone, brittle bones, and a general loss of vitality.

Peptide therapy involves injecting peptides into the body. This aids with the production of HGH and works to increase energy, build muscle mass, strengthen bones, and reduce body fat and inflammation.

Here are some of the benefits peptide therapy can provide:

  •     Faster workout recovery
  •     Increased muscle mass
  •     Better sleep
  •     Improved cardiovascular function
  •     Boosted HGH production
  •     Improved immunity
  •     Better gut health
  •     Boosted libido and reduced erectile dysfunction in men
  •     Improved hormone regulation
  •     Faster healing times from injuries
  •     Aids with weight loss and body fat reduction
  •     Boosts strength and stamina

Peptides for Skin

Peptides are not only good for the body, but they also benefit the complexion.

In addition to slowing down HGH production, our bodies also don’t produce as much collagen as they did when we were younger. Collagen is found in many connective tissues in the body and helps keep skin firm. When collagen production slows down, it results in sagging and wrinkles.

Collagen is made of peptides that aid the body with collagen production, thus improving the skin’s youthful appearance. Peptides can be found in several serums and topical products, but they can be even more effective when injected directly into the skin.

Peptide therapy offers the following benefits to the complexion:

  •     Improves firmness
  •     Increases the skin barrier to protect against toxins and UV rays
  •     Works as an antimicrobial to reduce breakouts
  •     Reduces inflammation
  •     Evens skin tone
  •     Reduces wrinkles
  •     Repairs damaged skin

What Injectable Peptides are Recommended for Anti-Aging?

There are over 60 types of peptides that are deemed safe by the FDA. But which ones should you be using? Here are a few that are recommended.

  • Sermorelin: This is the most popularly used peptide injectable. It is recommended for increasing muscle mass, reducing body fat, and firming up the skin.
  • Ipamorelin: Ipamorelin activates the hormone ghrelin causing the body to immediately begin producing HGH. It is effective in aiding with weight loss and increasing bone density and muscle mass.
  • CJC-1295: Unlike ipamorelin, which immediately activates HGH production, this offers a slower activation, typically taking between 6-10 days. It is often used with ipamorelin to produce both short-term and long-term results. When used together, the peptides can be 10 times more effective than when used on their own.
  • GHRP-2 and GHRP-6: These peptides are synthetic ghrelin activators that have been shown to increase the Insulin-Like Growth Factor (IGF-1). In doing so, they promote the development of bone and tissue. They also affect how the body processes sugar.
  • BPC157: This peptide is comprised of 15 amino acids that aid with tissue repair and gut health.
  • Thymosin: Thymosin has immune-boosting benefits and helps reduce symptoms of chronic inflammatory conditions.
  • IGF1-LR3: This peptide is recommended for weight loss. It works like popular weight loss drugs, but it doesn’t come with the risk of many side effects. It is effective in burning fat and building muscle mass.
  • GHK-Cu: GHK-Cu stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles naturally.
  • Bremelanotide PT 141: Libido slows down with age. This peptide interacts with the brain and body to increase sexual arousal and satisfaction without the side effects of many pharmaceuticals.

Is Peptide Therapy Safe?

Peptide therapy sounds great on paper, but the idea of injecting something into your body will make some people question the safety of the treatment.

So is peptide therapy safe? Here’s what we know so far.

Safer Than HGH: In the past, many athletes took HGH directly to help them reach their fitness goals. Eventually, HGH was banned due to health concerns. Peptide therapy is emerging as a safer alternative as it produces similar results with fewer side effects.

Possible Side Effects: While peptide therapy is generally safe, it has been shown to produce side effects, including increased appetite and fluid retention, elevated blood sugar, and increased sensitivity to insulin that can make it difficult to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

More Studies Needed to Determine Long-Term Results: Studies so far have shown that peptide therapy is mostly safe when used short term. More studies are needed to determine the effects it would have when used long-term.

You also run certain risks when using peptides topically and orally. Topical treatments may contain ingredients that irritate the skin. Oral methods may not break down in the bloodstream as intended and may not produce the intended results.

It’s also not advisable to use any sort of peptides if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

In general, it’s best to talk to a doctor before starting any type of peptide therapy and to immediately alert providers if any side effects occur.

Efficacy of Injectable Peptides

But the real question is, is peptide therapy effective?

Peptide therapy has been shown to increase the release of HGH and IGF-1 in humans. However, there is no evidence that this leads to a significant change in body composition, athletic performance, or recovery.

There is also no research backing peptide therapy’s effects on well-trained individuals like bodybuilders and athletes. Therefore, scientists are unable to determine which muscle groups it targets and what types of workouts it is suited for.

All of us want to look and feel younger. Peptide therapy may just be the best solution, but more research is needed to determine how safe and effective it can be. Will you be adding it to your health routine?
